Baby Boy Bedding and Decorating the Nursery

It’s a boy! Time to decorate the nursery with sports themes or race cars. Before you do that, it’s a good idea to plan the look of the entire nursery. This means thinking about the colors of the walls or the type of wallpaper, the crib bedding, and the type of crib. Since you will be spending a lot of time in the nursery, the design and theme you choose is mainly for your benefit. Your child won’t care what his room looks like until he’s much older.

Boys rooms generally include strong primary colors. Think of shiny race cars with deep reds and strong metallic blues. However, it's best to use them as accents, or the colors might be overwhelming for you and baby. Softer colors as a base for walls gives a calmer, smoother feeling. For sports, think of darker, earthy colors, like the greens and browns of footballs and baseball diamonds. If you don’t wish to go through the expense of renovating a particular theme when your boy gets older, try more general themes with lots of variety, such as a range of sports rather than strictly baseball.

Depending on your taste, cool neutral colors are great ideas for a nursery as well. Light browns, greens, and blues are timeless, and when your child grows older he’ll probably enjoy it as well. Plain white means you and your child can change the decor without worrying about a major repainting.

Crib bedding comes in as many styles and themes as ideas you can think of. Look around or browse online to see what best matches or compliments the walls and curtains. As the crib and bedding will be the focal point of the room, look for something distinctive and complimentary.

A bedding set consists of 3 pieces to 6 pieces and beyond. 3 piece sets include a fitted sheet, bumper and blanket or comforter. 6 pieces add on a diaper stacker, matching window valance and bed skirt (dust ruffle.) All pieces should be machine washable, and the bumpers made of soft but durable foam. The fitted sheet should fit tightly around the mattress to prevent it from being loosened. Comforters or anything soft such as pillows, quilts or cushions should not be in the crib when baby is sleeping, as it could cause the danger of suffocation.

Remember that you will be spending long hours in the nursery, and your memories of baby will include the nursery and it’s contents. Cute bedding, a pleasant color scheme and a beautiful crib with baby sleeping within will be remembered and cherished for the rest of your life.
